Welcome to Star Trek Online! It's a vast, vast game with a rich history rooted in one of science fiction's most iconic franchises . . . and it can also be a little overwhelming. This guide is here to walk you step by step through the game's most basic systems and progression up through the early and midgame.
If you’re newer to gaming or games like STO, this guide will walk you through the many aspects of the game. If you’re a veteran gamer, you’ll probably find specific parts helpful. We’ve broken up the guide into 8 sections but skip around or reference as you need. The guide has many instructions on how to do things that will be useful to any new player; any recommendations on what to do should be taken as just that: recommendations. The game is pretty open-ended in terms of progression so do what’s fun and welcome aboard!
This section covers character creation, character/ship anatomy, basic UI and systems, item equipping, and foundational terminology.
This section covers sector space, missions/episodes, patrols, leveling up, skills, traits and accolades.
This section will walk through basic principles for setting up ground and space builds through the stages of the early leveling journey as well as how to deal with difficulty spikes throughout the episodes.
This section discusses how to manage inventory, in-game resources, currencies, the exchange, phoenix boxes, and the Zen-store (C-store).
This section will walk through how to navigate social systems like chat, friends, teams, and fleets in STO.
This section will walk through all of the other systems in STO that are outside of the main gameplay of ships and characters, including duty officer chains, R&D, upgrading, Reputations, Specializations, Admiralty, and Endeavors.
This section will walk through different classes, tiers, and types of ship builds, along with other features found on more advanced and higher tier ships.
This section covers content beyond episodes such as events, task force operations, alternate characters, customization, and difficulty settings.
A word from your authors:
This is our definitive new player guide for Star Trek Online. We’ve each been playing for over ten years and no other Star Trek game scratches the same itch. STO has a vast array of content from across the eras and shows of Trek, features and references characters and ships from all over the universe. It’s a love letter to all of Star Trek, and this guide is our primer to its fundamentals. When writing it, we made new characters to chart our course through those early levels so that we’d be walking through the same journey you’re about to experience. It takes a community, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out another amazing resource for players new and old: the STO wiki: https://stowiki.net/ which has thousands of pages on everything you’ll find in the game. It’s an invaluable resource that we use all the time.
